This one-day symposium highlights faculty and student research in the interdisciplinary field of urban studies as situated within a liberal arts curriculum. Urban studies exists as a major in less than a dozen national liberal arts colleges, and only a handful of these schools are urban campuses. In its 4th year of existence at Trinity College, the urban studies program has already entered the top dozen among 39 majors at the college. There are certainly challenges in this rapid growth, given the breadth of interconnected interests, from biology to studio arts, engineering to English, and across many other humanities and social science fields. Yet there are also great strengths in that breadth, and we seek to celebrate these strengths at Trinity – and beyond, since the symposium will also gain from the participation of a select roster of invited keynote speakers from around the Northeast region.
